General description
GranuCult® prime Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Sucrose (TCBS) Agar is a complex medium designed for the isolation and differentiation of Vibrio spp. and other enteropathogenic microorganisms from products intended for human consumption, animal feed, environmental samples in the production area, food production, food handling, and other materials.
The synergistic effect of high concentration of thiosulfate, citrate and strong alkalinity inhibits the growth of Enterobacteriaceae spp. The medium is highly selective as the bile salts present in the medium suppresses the growth of Enterococci spp.
The differentiation is achieved based on sucrose fermentation, pH indicators and H2S production from thiosulfate. Vibrio spp. do not produce H2S but depending on the species, may ferment sucrose. Peptone and yeast extract in the media allow good growth and agar is the solidifying agent.
