General description
Polyglycerol is a highly biocompatible polymer with a main chain structure similar to that of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In contrast to PEG, which only bears a maximum of two functional groups, limiting possibilities for derivatization, polyglycerol carries a hydroxyl side group in every repeating unit. The hydroxyl groups in polyglycerol not only increase the hydrophilicity of this polymer, but also allows for its modification, leading to polymers with a wide range of different functional groups, as well as conjugation to biomolecules.
Application
As a promising PEG alternative, polyglycerol and polyglycerol-containing polymers have great potential in applications including-anti-fouling -drug delivery-tissue engineering-diagnostics and biosensors.

Polyglycerols (sometimes also called "polyglycidols") represent a class of highly biocompatible and multihydroxy-functional polymers that may be considered as a multifunctional analogue of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Various architectures based on a polyglycerol scaffold are feasible depending on the monomer employed.
