General description

Agarose is commonly used in research for gel electrophoresis to separate DNA and RNA fragments. It is a natural polysaccharide isolated and purified from red algae. It has a linear structure consisting of alternating D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose units. When dissolved in solution, upon cooling, it forms a solid yet porous gel to use as a medium to separate nucleic acid fragments by size. When an electrical current is applied the charged molecules migrate through the gel.

Application

Agarose tablets can be used in research applications for:

  • Separation and analysis of nucleic acids by agarose gel electrophoresis, Northern Blot, or Southern Blot
  • Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis (SCGE), also known as comet assays
  • Hydrocolloid gels to study the structural influence of gels on the release of carbohydrates
  • Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion plates used to quantify antibodies and antigens
  • Radial immunodiffusion (RID)

Features and Benefits

  • Qualified for molecular biology applications
  • Free of endonucleases: DNase and RNase
  • Convenient, quick and easy to use
  • Low EEO and gelling temperature for routine analysis
  • High gel strength 1,200 g/cm2 (1% gel)
  • Separates DNA & RNA fragments 100bp - 23kb in 2% - 0.5% agarose gel, respectively.
  • Northern or Southern blotting, preferred for fragment sizes >1kb
