Gene Information

human ... UCN(7349)

General description

Urocortin (UCN) belongs to the hypothalamic hormone corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) family. UCN has 45% homology to CRF. UCN is expressed in brain, placenta, lymphocytes and heart. In human chromosome, the gene UCN is localized on 2p23.3.

Specificity

The antibody detects endogenous levels of total UCN protein.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide corresponding to residues near the C terminal of human urocortin

Application

Anti-UCN antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunohistochemical analysis.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Urocortin (UCN1) is a key protein involved in regulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and modulating stress responses. Ucn1 is associated with both G-protein coupled CRF receptors and CRF binding proteins. UCN increases the heart rate, cardiac output, and coronary blood flow according to the dosage. UCN protects cardiac myocytes from cell death due to stress. Ucn upregulates p42/p44 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway and protects the heart from reperfusion injury. High levels of Ucn mRNA have been observed in the Edinger−Westphal (EW) nucleus, associated with alcohol and drug addiction. Ucn delays the gastric emptying and reduces the food intake and thus regulates the body weight. Ucn enhances anxiogenic-like or stress-like effect. Ucn causes degranulation of mast cells and increases vascular permeability in response to stress. Ucn is found to be associated with stress induced atopic dermatitis or psoriasis.
