General description

Lactulose is a synthetic derivative of lactose. It is made up of one molecule of galactose and one molecule of fructose.

Application

Lactulose has been used in the preparation of milk.
Lactulose, a disaccharide composed of fructose and galactose units, is used as an osmolyte that relieves constipation and supports probiotic processes in the intestine and colon. Lactulose helps stabilize blood glucose and insulin levels.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Lactulose helps to decrease the concentration of blood ammonia in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. It is also used to treat constipation as an osmotic laxative. This non-absorbable disaccharide is catabolized through the bacterial flora to short chain fatty acids. The enzymes of the mammalian digestive tract do not have the ability to digest lactulose.
