These vials come pre-assembled, but are not sterile. The slit is a narrow cut along the septa's diameter. These pre-slit septa are often used in automated systems and often recommended by instrument manufacturers. The slit ensures that atmospheric pressure is maintained in the head space of the vial. This feature also reduces the risk of bent needles and coring, among other benefits.
