General description

Periodic acid (H5IO6) is a colorless crystalline solid. It is widely employed as an oxidant and is weakly acidic in nature. It can be synthesized from iodic(V) acid.

Application

Periodic acid may be used in the synthesis of diiodine heptoxide (I2O7). It may be used in the Periodic acid Schiff staining procedures.
