General description

Carmine is a cochineal product usually furnished as an aluminum and calcium salt of carminic acid. Carminic acid is used for human-medical cell diagnosis and serves the purpose of the histological investigation of sample material of human origin. It is suitable for staining nuclei in histological sections. It is utilized in various staining methods including the procedure for detection of glycogen and mucous substances (Best′s carmine), for nuclear staining, or vital staining.

Application

Carminic acid (CI 75470) is used in Orth′s lithium carmine technique for nuclear staining, Best′s stain for glycogen, and Southgates′s mucicarmine method.
