General description

SMAD family member 6 (SMAD6) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 15q22.31. The encoded protein is localized in both nuclei and cytoplasm and is expressed in variety of human tissues, including ovary. SMAD6 consists of MAD homology 2 (MH2) domain, involved in protein-protein interaction.

Immunogen

peptide corresponding to the C-terminal region of human SMAD6, conjugated to KLH. The corresponding sequence is identical in rat, mouse and bovine.

Biochem/physiol Actions

SMAD family member 6 (SMAD6) induces endocytosis and negatively regulates apoptosis by inhibiting transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway. In addition, it also indirectly regulates stemness by inhibiting erythropoiesis in cord blood hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Mutation in the gene leads to congenital cardiovascular malformation (CVM). Overexpression or genetic variation of SMAD6 is associated with the development of ovarian cancer.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.
