General description
Lanolin is a wool fat. It is a semisolid of high viscosity. Contact allergy to lanolin (wool alcohols), an important sensitizer, in a central London teaching hospital patch-test population has been reported. Simplified extraction of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, frequently found in lanolin, has been proposed. It is utilized as an emulsifier in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.
Application
Lanolin was used to compose the lanolin ointment to estimate the release kinetics of izotretinon and heparin from various semisolid dosage forms by UV-VIS spectroscopy. It was used to prepare the emulsified aqueous solutions containing crystalline dicarboxylic acid. It may be added as excipient to compose a nanoscale-dispersed eye ointment (NDEO) for the treatment of severe evaporative dry eye.
