Application

Carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex beads (fluorescent orange) have been used to block phagocytosis by hemocytes in Drosophila. It has also been used to assess the uptake of latex beads by antigen presenting cells from porcine respiratory system.
Carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex beads have been used to collect morphofunctional data about the immune systems of Carabus lefebvrei, a helicophagous Italian endemic ground beetle often used as an indicator of the habitat quality of the Apennines mountain forests. Carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex beads have also been used to inform comparative studies on immunity defense mechanisms of adults and larvae of the coleopteran Cetonischema aeruginosa and to investigate the phagocytic activity of cultured rat thyroid cells.

Phagocytosis by hemocytes, Drosophila macrophages, is essential for resistance to Streptococcus pneumoniae in adult flies. Activated macrophages require an increased supply of energy and we show here that a systemic metabolic switch, involving the release of glucose from glycogen, is

Sculpting of structure and function of three-dimensional multicellular tissues depend critically on the spatial and temporal coordination of cellular physical properties, yet the organizational principles that govern these events, and their disruption in disease, remain poorly understood. We investigated the phagocytic activity of cultured rat thyroid cells (FRTL) by using latex beads. FRTL cells ingested many carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex beads (c-latex beads), which had carboxyl residues on the surface, whereas they ingested few polystyrene latex beads (p-latex
