General description
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleoside triphosphate formed exclusively in the mitochondria. It is a high-energy molecule described as the energy currency in all living systems. The chemical energy contained in the phosphate bond of ATP drives most cellular processes. Genetic disorders such as Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, Leigh syndrome, neuropathy, ataxia, and retinitis pigmentosa affect the generation of ATP in the mitochondria.
Application
ATP Assay Kit has been used to quantify the ATP concentration by fluorometric detection of ATP in samples.
Suitability
Suitable for the determination of ATP in samples such as animal tissue and cell culture samples.
Principle
The ATP Colorimetric/Fluorometric Assay Kit is a sensitive assay for determining ATP in various samples (ranging from 2–10 nmole/well for the colorimetric assay and from 20–1,000 pmole/well for the fluorometric assay). ATP concentration is determined by phosphorylating glycerol, resulting in a colorimetric (570 nm) or fluorometric (lex = 535/lem = 587 nm) product proportional to the amount of ATP present.
Other Notes
The fluorometric assay is 10-100 times more sensitive than the colorimetric assay.

Enhanced mitochondrial fission suppresses signaling and metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer.
Breast cancer research : BCR, 22(1), 60-60 (2020-06-07)
Mitochondrial dynamics underlies malignant transformation, cancer progression, and response to treatment. Current research presents conflicting evidence for functions of mitochondrial fission and fusion in tumor progression. Here, we investigated how mitochondrial fission and fusion states regulate underlying processes of cancer
Oncogene, 25(34), 4706-4716 (2006-08-08)
Mitochondria are key players in several cellular functions including growth, division, energy metabolism, and apoptosis. The mitochondrial network undergoes constant remodelling and these morphological changes are of direct relevance for the role of this organelle in cell physiology. Mitochondrial dysfunction

Mitochondrial disorders encompass any medical specialty and affect patients at any age. Likewise, the spectrum of clinical and genetic signatures of these disorders is ample, making a precise diagnosis difficult. We will report some of the major clinical phenotypes observed
