General description
Chylomicrons are large triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and one of the major lipoprotein particles in plasma. It contains a central lipid core composed of triglycerides, esterified cholesterol, and phospholipids.
Application
Chylomicrons from human plasma has been used as a standard for the identification and chemical characterization of lipoproteins in plasma and platelet samples by Raman spectra.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Chylomicrons are synthesized from dietary lipids like fatty acids and cholesterol inside enterocytes. Circulation of chylomicrons distributes dietary triglyceride to adipose tissue and muscle. Elevated chylomicron levels are observed in the blood of familial chylomicronemia syndrome patients.
