General description

An effective antioxidant. Scavenges hypochlorous acid, peroxyl, superoxide, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals. Also exhibits prooxidant properties, as demonstrated by its ability to reduce iron ions and to generate reactive sulfur-containing radicals that can damage certain proteins, such as α1-antiproteinase and creatine kinase. DHLA has recently been shown to inhibit apoptosis in rat thymocytes induced by methylprednisolone and etoposide.
