General description

Phenazepam, a benzodiazepine drug produced in Russia, is used in Europe as an anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant. Although not used therapeutically in the US, the drug can be purchased on the internet for “laboratory research” purposes. Cases of abuse have been reported from European countries such as Sweden and Russia to states including New York, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Application

  • Advancements in Designer Benzodiazepine Detection: Phenazepam is included in studies aiming to advance the detection of designer benzodiazepines, contributing significantly to forensic and clinical toxicology (Wu and Fu, 2022).

  • Neuroactive Substance Monitoring: Phenazepam′s detection trends were studied in the context of new psychoactive substance monitoring, reflecting its ongoing surveillance and public health implications in Australia (Syrjanen et al., 2023).

  • Pharmacological Analysis of GABA(A) Receptors: A comprehensive pharmacological analysis was conducted on Phenazepam among other ligands, investigating its anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and hypnotic properties through GABA(A) receptor modulation (Voronin et al., 2023).
