General description

α-Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E. Vitamin E can be obtained through dietary sources. RRR‐α‐tocopherol is a natural form of α-Tocopherol.

Application

DL-alpha-Tocopherol acetate was used as a vitamin E supplement for studying whether the addition of an antioxidant or vitamin E in the diet of rats with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis can reduce detrimental impact of inflammatory bowel disease.

Biochem/physiol Actions

α-Tocopherol is also known as a radical-chain breaker due to its anti-oxidant property.
Tocopherols are lipid soluble anti-oxidants that protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. α-Tocopherol is the form of tocopherol preferentially absorbed by Homosapiens. DL-α-Tocopherol acetate can inhibit oxidation of linoleate.

The formation of alpha-tocopherol--lipoxygenase complex was elucidated using immobilized affinity purified soybean lipoxygenase and [D-3H]alpha-tocopherol. The alpha-tocopherol--lipoxygenase complex did not dissociate on addition of linoleic acid. Iodoacetate modified immobilized lipoxygenase did not form the complex with alpha-tocopherol.
