General description

The essential function of Hanks′ Balanced Salt solution is to maintain pH as well as osmotic balance. It also provides water and essential inorganic ions to cells.
Formulation: click here.

Application

Hanks′ Balanced Salt solution has been used:

  • to study the degradation and cytotoxic effects of the composite material and the ion and/or magnetite release from the scaffolds.
  • to measure the stability of the magnetic scaffold material in bone tissue engineering.
  • in Fluorometric Measurements of intracellular calcium levels [Ca2+]
  • for isolating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) from umbilical cord blood
  • For assessing airway inflammation in mice

Other Notes

Phenol red has been shown to interfere with the growth of some cells at cloning densities. Use this medium when growing cells at low densities.

Magnetic bio-hybrid porous scaffolds have been synthesized, nucleating nano-apatite in situ on self-assembling collagen, in the presence of magnetite nano-particles. The magnetic phase acted as a sort of cross-linking agent for the collagen, inducing a chemico-physical-mechanical stabilization of the material
