Malonyl-CoA-acyl carrier protein transacylase (MCAT) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 22q13.2. The encoded protein contains two subdomains, where one subdomain is composed of short four-stranded parallel β-sheet and 12 helices and the other subdomain contains a four-stranded antiparallel β-sheet and two helices.

Malonyl-CoA-acyl carrier protein transacylase (MCAT) is an important enzyme involved in the fatty-acid biosynthesis pathway of bacteria. This enzyme catalyzes the transfer of a malonyl group from malonyl–CoA to the free thiol group of the phosphopantetheine arm of acyl carrier protein. In addition, it is also implicated in polyketide biosynthesis, producing one of the largest classes of secondary metabolites, such as the tetracyclines and erythromycins. Hence, MCAT is considered as a key enzyme in bacterial metabolic activity. This enzyme also serves as a potential drug target in the discovery of antibacterial agents.
