General description

Mitomycin C is an antitumor antibiotic.

Application

Mitomycin C has been used:
  • to cease mitosis
  • in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) for inactivation and plating mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs)
  • as mutagen in mutagenicity assay

Mitomycin C is used as an inhibitor for studies of cell-free protein biosynthesis. It also inhibits DNA synthesis. It has been used as a genotoxic agent for tumor cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mitomycin C (MMC) acts as a prototype for drugs with bioreductive alkylation. It is mainly found to be active under anaerobic conditions. MMC exhibits a vast clinical antitumor spectrum effectively in gastric, pancreatic and breast cancer.
