Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. Is it feasible to use Novec as a medium to transfer heat out of tissue specimens for super cooling without a Histochill unit? Can dry ice be added to the Novec for cooling? Additionally, is it suitable to place the Novec in a vessel and then submerge that vessel in Liquid Nitrogen, or would this temperature impact the efficacy or structure of the Novec?

    1 answer
    1. It is not recommended to place Novec 7000 directly into dry ice to cool it, as the temperature differential may cause it to splatter out of the container. A better option would be to cool the Novec 7000 with liquid nitrogen, similar to using liquid nitrogen to super cool isopentane or 2 methylbutane. Novec 7000 is suitable for histobath working solution, but does not specifically advise that Novec 7000 can be used with liquid nitrogen. A better option for using liquid nitrogen might be the more traditional use of isopentane or 2 methylbutane.

  2. What is the boiling point of this liquid? On your website it states 34 degC. However, the research by Y. Yoon et al. 2023 using this liquid states 61 degC.

    1 answer
    1. This product is manufactured by 3M. The manufacturer lists a boiling point of 34 °C at 1 atm. See the link below to the supplier datasheet:
