General description

Humic acid (HA) is a heterogeneous macromolecule mainly found in soil and water.[1]

Application

Humic acid has been used to prepare stock solution employed in the following experiments:
  • Coagulation activity assay of Moringa oleifera protein extracts for humic acid removal.[2]
  • Adsorption edge experiment to study its effect on the sorption of tetracycline onto goethite.[3]
  • Evaluation of the ability of polymeric adsorbent Supelite Dax-8 to remove humic acid from nucleic acid extracts prior to quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR).[4]

Recent studies suggest that direct mortality and physiological effects caused by pollutants are major contributing factors to global amphibian decline. However, even sublethal concentrations of pollutants could be harmful if they combined with other factors to cause high mortality in

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. Can you please tell me what is the size range of its (53680)particles?

    1 answer
    1. The particle size range for this product is not determined.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. I could not dissolve the humic acid (53680) completely in water (1 mg/ml). Could you please suggest a method to dissolve it.

    1 answer
    1. This product is tested for solubility at 10 mg/mL in water. However, this does yeild a turbid solution that contains insolubles. The pH of this solution has historically been acidic at a range of 4 - 5 . Please see the link below to review a publication that suggests solubility may be improved by the addition of a base to increase the pH to approximately 7:

  5. I am looking for more information regarding Humic acid (53680). We are trying to use this as a reference standard for a method. can we obtain a few different lots with %HA content? Can we have COA's with the material as well showing %HA content?

    1 answer
    1. This product is a technical grade material and may demonstrate a high degree of variability from lot to lot. The current testing does not include HA content.

To discuss this further, we kindly ask you to navigate to the link https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/techservice and click on "Product Technical Inquires" under the Products Section with all the required information so that a member of our team can reach out to you to assist further. Thank you.

  6. What is the elemental composition of product 53680? Is there a certificate of analysis? How can I get it? Thank you.

    1 answer
    1. A true structure cannot be given since humic acid is of natural origin and not of uniform composition. It consists of heteropolycondensates of MW's ranging from 2,000-500,000 (but mainly ~ 20,000-50,000). Humic acids are composed of a policyclic core (mostly aromatic), loosely bound polysaccharides, proteins, phenols, and chelated metal ions. The latter ones are bound to the core by carboxy- and carbonyl-functional groups. Benzenoidal and chinoidal systems are connected to each other by methylene-, ether-, amine-, and ester-bonds.

Certificates of Analysis are available on this product page. See the DOCUMENTATION section. A lot number will be necessary, however, a link to a sample document is also offered. See the link below to review the sample Certificate of Analysis:

  7. What is the molecular weight of humic acids 53680 ?

    1 answer
    1. Product 53680 is of natural origin and composition. The molecular weight will vary from lot to lot. The true structure is not provided for humic acid of natural origin and not of uniform composition. The product consists of heteropolycondensates of molecular weights ranging from 2,000-500,000.
