General description

Enzyme Commission (EC) Number 4.2.2.x

Biochem/physiol Actions

Chondroitinase C acts upon chondroitin sulfate C, releasing unsaturated 6-sulfated disaccharides. The enzyme also acts on hyaluronic acid, producing unsaturated nonsulfated disaccharides. The enzyme is strongly inhibited by NaCl, Fe2+, Co2+ and phosphate ions.

Other Notes

One unit will form 0.1 μmole of unsaturated uronic acid per hr at pH 8.0 at 25 °C using chondroitin sulfate C as substrate.

A chondroitinase that acts upon chondroitin sulfate C and hyaluronic acid was isolated from Flavobacterium heparinum. This enzyme was seperated from constitutional chondroitinase AC and an induced chondroitinase B also present in extracts of F. heparinum previously grown in the

Chondroitinase B and chondroitinase C were separated from an extract of Flavobacterium heparinum induced with chondroitin 6-sulfate by using column chromatography on hydroxylapatite. Chondroitinase C was eluted together with the activities of hyaluronidase, delta4,5glycosiduronase, and sulfatase. The latter two activities
