General description
Aluminum oxide is an amphoteric oxide of aluminum. It is also known as alumina. It is widely used in abrasives, refractories, electronics, heat-resistant fibers, ceramics, and glass industries due to its wide availability, high thermal stability, and melting point as well as excellent strength and hardness. Alumina distinguishes itself from many composite materials due to its outstanding mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties.
Application
Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is widely used as an electrical insulator because of its high ionic inter-atomic bonds, excellent thermal resistive properties, and chemical stability. In electronic and microelectronic applications, Al2O3 is used as a substrate for integrated circuits, as well as high-temperature and corrosive-resistant coating materials. Being a dielectric material,Al2O3 possesses a high breakdown strength (300–700 MV m-1) and relatively large bandgap (∼ 9Ev). Therefore it is a potential candidate for use in dielectric capacitors. It is also used in spark plug insulators, micro-electric substrates, and insulating heatsinks.
In plastic and rubber industries, modified Al2O3 is used as a reinforcing filler to improve the rheological and mechanical properties of the composites.
