General description
Ytterbium(III) oxide (Yb₂O₃) is a wide bandgap(~3.26eV) material with high thermal stability, suitable for optoelectronic devices. It can be a potential host material for development of phosphors and solid-state lighting technologies. Furthermore, Yb₂O₃ nanofibers are being explored for renewable energy applications, particularly in enhancing the efficiency of solar cells and photocatalytic processes.
Application
- Ytterbium (III) oxide reinforced novel TeO2–B2O3–V2O5 glass system: Investigation of the optical, structural, physical, and thermal properties of ytterbium oxide reinforced glass, highlighting improvements in material performance (Kilic et al., 2021).
- Sonochemical preparation of a ytterbium oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for supercapacitors with enhanced capacitive performance: Discusses the synthesis and application of ytterbium oxide/graphene nanocomposites in energy storage devices (Naderi et al., 2016).

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a well-established modality for cancer therapy, which locally kills cancer cells when light irradiates a photosensitizer. However, conventional PDT is often limited by the extremely short lifespan and severely limited diffusion distance of reactive oxygen species
