General description

Parabens are ester derivatives of hydroxybenzoic acid. Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is a short-chain paraben, suitable for applications in food. It is found in cloudberry, white wine, yellow passion fruit, and bourbon vanilla.

Application

Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has been used:
  • to wash mites from the cells of Apis mellifera workers preceding the harvest of mite saliva
  • as a component of grape/apple juice agar plates to culture Drosophila for the extraction of ovaries/embryos
  • in studies on sterol hormones such as testosterone biosynthesis
