General description

Phosphatidylglycerol (PG), an anionic lipid is present in the membranes of mammals. It accounts for 1–2% of the total phospholipids.

Application

10:0 PG (1,2-didecanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol)) may be used as a component in the liposomes, labeled with β-pyrene-C10-PG. It may also be used as a lipid standard to compare accurate lipid quantification with deuterated standard lipids using electrospray ionization (ESI).

Biochem/physiol Actions

In cyanobacteria and plants, phosphatidylglycerol (PG) plays a key role in the formation and activities of thylakoid membranes. Absence of PG can bring a change in the function of photosystem (PS) I and PSII reaction centers (RCs).

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) can be approximately defined as the lipid monomer concentration at which appreciable amounts (>5% of total) of micellar aggregates first begin to appear in the equilibrium: nM1<=>Mn
