General description

Cardiolipin, the mitochondrial-specific phospholipid, helps maintain mitochondrial function, membrane potential and structural support for the inner mitochondrial membrane and the proteins in it. Concentration and composition changes of cardiolipin have been implicated in pathological conditions including ischemia, hypothyroidism, aging, heart failure and cardioskeletal myopathy (Barth syndrome). Cardiolipin has also been shown as a signaling molecule in apoptosis.

Application

14:0 Cardiolipin (sodium salt) has been used for the mass spectrometry (MS) analysis to determine the structure of lipid A.

Cardiolipin is a phospholipid that is specific to the inner mitochondrial membrane and essential for numerous mitochondrial functions. Accordingly, a quantitative assay for cardiolipin can be a valuable aspect of assessing mitochondrial content and functional capacity. The current study was

Soil bacteria are decomposer organisms crucial for the biodegradation of organic pollutants, mineralization of dead organic matter and the turnover of biogenic elements. In their environment they are constantly exposed to membrane-lytic enzymes emitted to the soil by other microorganisms
