General description

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a vinyl based water soluble polymer that can be used as a non-ionic surface active agent. It can also be used as a biodegradable polymer and can be incorporated in adhesives, coatings, textiles ceramics and cosmetics. Its properties include good transparency, chemical resistance, toughness and anti-electrostatic properties.[1][2][3]

Application

PVA can be used in the preparation of microspheres which can be further used as biodegradable microcarriers.[4][5][6]

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Once dissolved, does the powder get separated from the solution? If so, how long does it take to be separated from solvent (assuming that solvent is water)?

    1 answer
    1. This product is water soluble up to 20%. The material is expected to stay in solution with proper preparation and storage. General instructions are as follows:
      1. Use unheated water
      2. Add water to vessel and initiate agitation or stirring
      3. Add desired amount of PVA, gradually, up to 20%
      4. Heat solution while stirring to 85°C, hold for 30 minutes

To maintain the product in solution, do not store at temperatures lower that 15°C.
Solutions stored at temperatures higher than 24°C should include a biocidal agent.

  4. Is there information available regarding the solubility of product 363073, which is a PVA (poly vinyl alcohol)? Additionally, how can this particular product be dissolved?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of product 363073, PVA (poly vinyl alcohol), indicates that it should dissolve in heated water, DMSO, and glycerol. It is expected to be around 40-50mg/mL soluble in hot water at a temperature of approximately 90-95 degrees Celsius.
