General description

Agar (Type A) is extracted from agarocytes of the red alga Rhodophyceae. It is a polysaccharide complex, consisting of a neutral gelling fraction, agarose, and a non-gelling fraction, agaropectin. Type-A agar forms a thermoreversible gel, and is most suitable for plant cell culture.

Application

Type A agar has been used:
  • to perform metal(loid)-related phenotyping of the Arabidopsis thaliana metal-sensitive mutant strains
  • as a component of Murashige and Skoog (MS) media to culturing Arabidopsis thaliana seeds
  • to culture Cicer arietinum L. (Chickpea) seeds for Agrobacterium rhizogenes mediated root transformation
