General description

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is a phospholipid found in all living organism. The egg yolk contains high levels of unsaturated PE which accounts to 83.10%. The phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) headgroup is a zwitterion, with a negatively charged phosphate group and positively charged free amine group.

Application

Egg Trans PE is suitable for use:
  • in the incubation of platelets for phospholipid enrichment and quantification by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS)
  • in the synthesis of isoketals-phosphatidylethanolamine (IsoK-PE)
  • in the preparation of phospholipid vesicles for factor X activation studies

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) along with other phospholipids forms the backbone of biological membranes. PE is known to regulate autophagy. The autophagic membranes possesses PE with high degree of unsaturation. Egg yolk PE has high radical scavenging activity owing to antioxidant potential.

Levuglandins and their stereo- and regio-isomers (termed isolevuglandins or isoketals) are gamma-ketoaldehydes (IsoK) that rapidly react with lysines to form stable protein adducts. IsoK protein adduct levels increase in several pathological conditions including cardiovascular disease. IsoKs can induce ion channel
