Description générale

An analytical reference standard of the major urinary metabolite of nicotine. Not only is cotinine a biomarker for users of nicotine products including cigarettes, cigars, and snuff, but it′s also an alkaloid found in tobacco. Suitable uses for this analytical reference standard include as a starting material in calibrators and controls for GC/MS and LC/MS applications in nicotine testing methods or clinical and diagnostic testing of nicotine biomarkers.

Application

  • Biomarker Analysis in Medical Research: Examination of prolidase as a potential indicator of inflammation associated with cigarette smoking, where (-)-cotinine is a key biomarker, enhances understanding of chronic inflammation and its biochemical pathways in smokers (Yıldırım & Kulaksızoglu, 2024).

  • Comparative Toxicology Studies: Research evaluating blood biomarkers of inflammation in users of heated tobacco products compares these markers, including (-)-cotinine, with non-smoking individuals, offering insights into the inflammatory effects of new tobacco product usage on health (Świątkowska et al., 2024).

Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is most often estimated using questionnaires, but they are unreliable. Biomarkers can provide valid information on ETS exposure, the preferred biomarker being cotinine. However, no reference range of hair cotinine exists to distinguish among
