General description

Chloroform is an organic chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) commonly used in industries as a solvent.

Application

Chloroform may be used in the following:

  • Extraction of active constituents of anti-inflammatory drugs for their analysis by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (ATR-FTIR) methods
  • Estimation of ascorbic acid, free phenolic acids, and flavonoids in extracts of chloroform, methanol, water and, acetic acid obtained from two edible leaf samples using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) coupled to photodiode array detector (DAD)
  • Preparation of cannabis product extracts for the analysis of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) residues on hands of suspected consumers by ion-mobility spectrometry (IMS)
  • Investigation of different solvents to measure their recovery ratios for the extraction of acrylamide and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from seafood samples to develop an HPLC-MS/MS-based method for their quantification
  • Extraction of pesticides by direct-immersion single drop micro-extraction (SDME) method from mango samples for their subsequent analysis by GC-MS
  • Sample preparation in the profiling of lipids from complex biological samples using off-line mixed-mode liquid chromatography coupled with reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

Chloroform was used in the making of silanized coverslips for DNA combing.
It may be used as:
  • Extractant in solvent extraction process.
  • A component of the binary mobile phases for liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure photoionization-mass spectrometry (LC–APPIMS) of triacylglycerol model compounds.
  • Solvent for recrystallization.
Suitable for HPLC, spectrophotometry, environmental testing

Solution-processed organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) hold great promise to enable roll-to-roll printing of environmentally friendly, mechanically flexible and cost-effective photovoltaic devices. Nevertheless, many high-performing systems show best power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) with a thin active layer (thickness is ~100 nm) that
