General description
1-Undecanethiol (UDT) is an alkanethiol that forms a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a variety of surfaces. It immobilizes the surface atoms and enhances the absorption of proteins. It can be synthesized by reacting bromo-1-undecanol and thiourea and subsequent purification using ethyl acetate.
Application
UDT can be used to functionalize polycarbonate filter membrane for immunological experiments which can further be used in the fabrication of plasmonic flow through biosensor based applications. SAM of UDT can be used in the colloidal gold enhanced immunoassay. It may be used to form SAM on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gold electrodes which can be used as adhesive intermediate layers.
Used to form hydrophilic SAMs and in mixed SAMs as spacers to provide a hydrophilic background. Also can be used to reduce non-specific protein adsorption.

Aptamers are chemically synthesized oligonucleotides or peptides with molecular recognition capabilities. We investigated recognition of substrate-tethered small-molecule targets, using neurotransmitters as examples, and fluorescently labeled DNA aptamers. Substrate regions patterned via microfluidic channels with dopamine or l-tryptophan were selectively recognized
