Biochem/physiol Actions

Indole alkaloid from Rauwolfia serpentina that is a Class Ia antiarrhythmia compound. It blocks sodium channels in skeletal and cardiac muscle and cardiac HERG potassium channels in the open state but not in the closed state. Ajmaline administered intravenously prolongs the atrioventricular (AV) conduction times in the heart and has been used diagnostically to detect AV block and other cardiac abnormalities.
