Phytoene is a colorless carotenoid,[1] that is bioavailable and may be beneficial for health.[2] It belongs to the carotenoid family and can absorb light in the UV (ultra violet) range (λ max 287nm).[3]

Application

(E/Z)-Phytoene has been used as a reference standard to prepare the standard curve in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phytoene acts as precursors for other carotenoids in nature.[3] It can also serve as free radical quenchers, DNA protectors and anti-inflammatory agents.[3]

    1. The E/Z prefix in the product name stands for Entgegen (opposite side) and Zusammen (same side) or Trans and Cis, respectively. This product consists of two isomers. The ratio of each has not been determined.
