General description

Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is an organophosphorus compound. TBP is a strong Lewis base and interacts with acids. It is used as a solvent for rare earth extraction and the nuclear fuel cycle. Additionally, TBP is used as a plasticizer for cellulose esters, lacquers, plastics, and vinyl resins

Application

Tributyl phosphate is used as:
  • An extractant for monocarboxylic acids(formic, acetic, and propionic) from an aqueous medium.
  • An additive to enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
  • A solvent in combination with ionic liquid[1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate] for the extraction of phenol and chlorophenols.
