General description

Carotenoids are an important class of naturally occurring pigments found in fruits and vegetables. Among the carotenoids, β-carotene has the greatest provitamin A potential and functions to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and macular degeneration. Low water solubility and poor chemical stability attributes to low absorption of β-carotene from food. β-carotene along with digestible lipids enriches its bio accessibility. Emulsions or nano emulsions encapsulates effectively delivers lipophilic β-carotene and increases its bioavailability.[1] β-carotene has anti-oxidant potential and reduces noise induced hearing loss and progression of macular degeneration.

Application

β-carotene has been used:
  • to generate nano emulsions to evaluate their bioavailability potential[1]
  • as a standard, for β-carotene evaluation in blood and skin samples using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC),
  • as a dietary supplement of vitamin-A in young rats by HPLC
  • as a dietary supplement in mice to reduce hearing loss and hair cell damage

Biochem/physiol Actions

The most important of the provitamins A, β-carotene can be classified as an antioxidant due to its inhibition of radical initiated peroxidation in vitro. However, in vivo it appears to act either as an antioxidant or a prooxidant depending on cellular environment. It reduces the incidence of many cancers, but enhances lung cancer incidence in smokers.
The most important of the provitamins A.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. Can this be used to prepare standard curves for the determination of β-carotene content in foods?

    1 answer
    1. The minimum purity of this product is 93% by UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. This item is intended for use in general laboratory applications and has not been tested for suitability as a standard. Suitability would have to be determined by the end user. Note that product V-058, a 100 ug/mL Certified Reference Material, is tested as a standard in HPLC/UV, LC/MS, and GC/FID headspace and may be of interest. 2. Is this food grade material?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not a food grade material. A food grade β-Carotene product is not currently offered.

  3. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
