General description

Xylenes are an isomeric mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons namely, o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene. It is used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical, printing, rubber, cleaning agent, paint thinner, varnish, synthetic fiber, and leather industries.

Application

Xylenes (histological grade) can be used as a clearing agent in routine histology and cytology applications to remove paraffin from tissue section slides before staining.
It can be used in:
  • Cresyl violet staining.
  • Fluoro-Jade B staining process.
  • Giemsa cell staining protocols.
