Greener Alternative Product

greener alternative category

General description

β -Glucanase represents a group of carbohydrate enzymes which break down glycosidic bonds within beta-glucan. It forms the main constituent of fungal cell walls and could be a potential structural and storage polysaccharide of marine macro-algae. It has the ability to degrade fungal cell walls and may be involved in defense mechanism of plants against pathogenic fungi.
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Greener Chemistry. This product has been enhanced for energy efficiency and waste prevention when used in cellulosic ethanol research. For more information see the article in biofiles.

Application

β -Glucanase was used as a cellulase enzyme in the combined biological and chemical pretreatment method for lignocellulosic ethanol production from energy cane. It was also used in the enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and production of ethanol.

Biochem/physiol Actions

A mixture composed mainly of β-1→3 / 1→4-glucanase, xylanase, and cellulase activities. β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, α-L-arabinofuranosidase, amylase, and protease activities are also present.

Unit Definition

One unit will liberate 1.0 μmole of glucose from cellulose in one hr at pH 5.0 at 37 °C (2 hr incubation time).

The fungal cell wall is a complex structure composed of chitin, glucans and other polymers, and there is evidence of extensive cross-linking between these components. The wall structure is highly dynamic, changing constantly during cell division, growth and morphogenesis. Hydrolytic

In this study, a novel beta-1,3-1,4-glucanase gene (designated as PtLic16A) from Paecilomyces thermophila was cloned and sequenced. PtLic16A has an open reading frame of 945 bp, encoding 314 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence shares the highest identity (61%)
