Gene Information
mouse ... EGF(13645)
General description
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent growth factor that stimulates the proliferation of various epidermal and epithelial cells. The gene encoding this protein is localized on mouse chromosome 3. Recombinant murine EGF is a 6.0kDa globular protein containing 53 amino acid residues, including three intramolecular disulfide-bonds.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been shown to inhibit gastric secretion, and to be involved in wound healing. EGF signals through a receptor known as c-erbB, which is a class I tyrosine kinase receptor. This receptor also binds with transforming growth factor-α (TGF-α) and VGF (vaccinia virus growth factor). Injection of EGF into neonatal and adult rats has been shown to induce neurobehavioral deficits related to schizophrenia.
Physical form
Lyophilized from 10 mM Sodium Phosphate, pH 8.5.
Reconstitution
Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.5-1.0 mg/ml. Do not vortex. This solution can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 week. For extended storage, it is recommended to further dilute in a buffer containing a carrier protein (example 0.1% BSA) and store in working aliquots at -20°C to -80°C.
