Gene Information

human ... MYH10(4628)

General description

Myosin-10, also known as Cellular myosin heavy chain, type B, Myosin heavy chain 10, Myosin heavy chain, non-muscle IIb, Non-muscle myosin heavy chain B, NMMHC-B, Non-muscle myosin heavy chain IIb, or NMMHC-IIB, and encoded by the gene MYH10, is a myosin protein found in non-muscle cells. Often called cellular myosin, Myosin-10 appears to play a role in cytokinesis, cell shape, and specialized functions such as secretion and capping. For instance Mysoin-10, during cell spreading, plays an important role in cytoskeleton reorganization, focal contacts and lamellipodial extension. Additionally, Myosin-10 is involved in many developmental and cellular functions including: axon guidance, retina development, cerebellar Purkinje cell layer development, exocytosis, embryonic development, mitotic cytokinesis, neuron migration, nuclear migration, regulation of cell shape, retina development, cardiac myofibril assembly, and ventricular cardiac muscle cell and adult heart development. Myosin-10 is localized to cell projections and lamellipodia. Myosin-10 is expressed in many cells and particularly in neurons in the cerebellum, spinal cord, and retina.

Cell-shape change in epithelial structures is fundamental to animal morphogenesis. Recent studies identified myosin-II as the major generator of driving forces for cell-shape changes during morphogenesis. Lulu (Epb41l5) is a major regulator of morphogenesis, although the downstream molecular and cellular
