Gene Information

human ... ADNP(23394)

General description

ADNP1, also known as Activity-dependent neuroprotector homeobox protein, and encoded by the gene ADNP/ADNP1/KIAA0784, is a potential transcription factor that appears to mediate some of the neuroprotective peptide VIP associated effects involving normal growth and cancer proliferation. ADNP1 is widely expressed and localized to the nucleus. ADNP1 is strongly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle tissue and the brain. ADNP1 is also found expressed in colon and breast cancer tissues but not in normal tissues, thus ADNP1 can be used as a potential cancer marker in some tissues. ADNP1 is upregulated in normal proliferative tissues by VIP, and it may increase the viability of certain cell types through the modulation of p53 activity. Interestingly, new research shows that ADNP1 may be a potential biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease, where ADP1 expression was specifically down-regulated in AD patients.
