Application
Dithiothreitol, 1M may be used as a reducing agent in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) loading buffer.[1] It may also be used as a reagent in saliva sterilization.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Dithiothreitol (DTT), also known as Cleland′s reagent, is a reducing agent containing two thiol functional groups.[2] It serves as a protective regent for thiol groups in protein chemistry studies.[3] DTT is used in chemical peptide synthesis[4] for reducing disulfide bonds in various substrates such as glutathione, proteins, and other macromolecules.[3] It is also used as a mucolytic agent during sputum processing.[4]
