General description

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are glycerol esters, that can be produced by the glycerolysis of triglycerides and alkyl esters.
This new Lipid detergent may be used for crystallizing membrane proteins by using lipidic mesophases. This method has variously been referred to as the lipidic cubic phase or in meso method. The method has been shown to be quite versatile in that it has been used to solve X-ray crystallographic structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic proteins, proteins that are monomeric, homo- and hetero-multimeric, chromophore-containing and chromophore-free, and alpha-helical and beta-barrel proteins.

Application

7.8 MAG has been used to form mesophase for PepTSt protein crystallization. It may also be used as a host lipid in MdfA (multidrug transporter protein)–YN1074 (Fab fragment) complex for crystallization by lipidic cubic phase (LCP) method.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) is non-toxic and does not show any adverse responses to mucous membranes at low concentration. Milk has MAG at low concentration. MAGs are used in several cosmetics products. It is also useful in plastic and textile industry.
