Atrazine-desethyl is a major cytochrome P450s (CYPs) derived metabolite of the herbicide atrazine, widely used for protection against broadleaf and grassy weeds in various crops. It has more stability than its parent atrazine and the same endocrine-disrupting toxicity.
The parent compound atrazine is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as per the legislation 2004/248/EC of 24th March 2004. But atrazine has a maximum residue limit (MRL) set in the range of 0.01-2 mg/kg for its presence in soybean, corn, and wheat crops by the United States (US) and the European Union (EU).

Application

The certified reference material (CRM) is intended to be used as a calibrant for chromatography and other analytical techniques.
The atrazine-desethyl CRM may also find below-given uses:

  • Analysis of atrazine and its major metabolites in water and soil samples by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes for solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for detection
  • QuEChERS-based extraction and liquid chromatography-diode-array detection (LC-DAD) of atrazine and its principal metabolites in natural water samples
  • Development of a carboxyl-modified polyacrylonitrile nanofibers mat (COOH-PAN NFsM) for the solid phase extraction (SPE) of atrazine and its metabolites from environmental water samples followed by their determination using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD)
  • Analysis of simazine and atrazine extracted from river water by reversed-phase liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (LC-UV)
  • Simultaneous separation and determination of atrazine and its main metabolites in 15 samples each of soybean, corn, and wheat by a novel UPLC-ESI-MS/MS-based method
