General description

Tetrachloroethylene is a chlorinated ethylene compound commonly used as a dry cleaning and degreasing solvent. It is a groundwater contaminant, which has adverse effects on human health due to its potential toxicity and carcinogenicity.

Application

Tetrachloroethylene may be used as an extraction solvent for the determination of oils and grease in water samples using the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy technique. It may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in biological fluids using headspace solid-phase micro extraction-capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), common industrial solvents, are among the most frequent contaminants found in groundwater supplies. Due to the potential toxicity and carcinogenicity of chlorinated ethylenes, knowledge about their transformation potential is important in evaluating their environmental fate.

Reductive dechlorination is a major degradation pathway of chlorinated ethenes in anaerobic subsurface environments, and reactive kinetic models describing the degradation process are needed in fate and transport models of these contaminants. However, reductive dechlorination is a complex biological process
