General description

Inositol phospholipid species are membrane-bound signaling molecules that have been implicated in almost all aspects of cellular physiology, including cellular growth, metabolism, proliferation, and survival.
Phosphatidylinositol phosphate is present in the plasma membrane.

Application

18:1 PIP has been used in liposome preparation. It may also be used to generate small unilamellar vesicles for liposome flotation assays.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylinositol phosphate helps to promote the plasma membrane H+-ATPase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PtdIns3P) is very essential for the biogenesis of autophagosomes and their precursors.

Phosphoinositides (PIs) are crucial lipid components of membranes and are involved in a number of cellular processes through interactions with their effector proteins. Recently, we have established a lipid-protein nanoscale bilayer (nanodisc) containing PIs, hereafter referred to as PI-nanodisc and

Defects in endosomal sorting have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease. Endosomal traffic is largely controlled by phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate, a phosphoinositide synthesized primarily by lipid kinase Vps34. Here we show that phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate is selectively deficient in brain tissue from humans with Alzheimer's
