PAHs are typically produced due to natural as well as anthropogenic activities; incomplete combustion of the organic matter being the predominant cause.

Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene may be used as an analytical standard for the quantification of the analyte in sewage sludge, solvent solutions and food extracts, water, and oil samples by various chromatography techniques.
