General description
Magnesium is a versatile metal that finds several important uses in organic synthesis. It is widely used for the formation of Grignard reagents, which are versatile organometallic compounds. They can react with a wide range of electrophiles, such as carbonyl compounds, to form new carbon-carbon bonds. Grignard reactions are essential in the synthesis of alcohols, carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes, and many other organic compounds. Magnesium can also be used in various reduction reactions.
Application
Magnesium (20-230 mesh) can be used in the synthesis of nanaomycin D via a Hauser–Kraus annulation using a chiral enone-lactone. It is also used to prepare polymorphs of Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb intermetallic compounds by the high-energy ball-milling method. These magnesium alloys are used as active materials in magnesium batteries.

The development of nanocarriers that selectively release guest molecules on sensing a particular biological signal is being actively pursued in nanomedicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Here we report a protein-based nanocarrier that opens in the presence of intracellular adenosine-5'-triphosphate

The magnesium transporter 1 (MAGT1) is a critical regulator of basal intracellular free magnesium (Mg(2+)) concentrations. Individuals with genetic deficiencies in MAGT1 have high levels of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and a predisposition to lymphoma. We show that decreased intracellular free

Northern Hemisphere sea ice has been declining sharply over the past decades and 2012 exhibited the lowest Arctic summer sea-ice cover in historic times. Whereas ongoing changes are closely monitored through satellite observations, we have only limited data of past

Mg(2+) has been shown to modulate the function of riboswitches by facilitating the ligand-riboswitch interactions. The btuB riboswitch from Escherichia coli undergoes a conformational change upon binding to its ligand, coenzyme B12 (adenosyl-cobalamine, AdoCbl), and down-regulates the expression of the
