Biochem/physiol Actions

Favipiravir (T-705) is an inhibitor of viral RNA polymerase. In cells, the comound is converted to T-705-4-ribofuranosyl-5-triphosphate, which selectively targets the viral polymerase without affecting mammalian RNA or DNA polymerases. Favipiravir inhibits replication of inluenza viruse A, B and C with IC50 values between 0.013 and 0.48 mM. The compound protects mice from lethal-dose infections of wild type and neuraminidase inhibitor-resistant strains of H5N1 viruses, Favipiravir has been found to have activity against many viruses including flavi-, alpha-, filo-, bunya-, arena-, noro-, and of other RNA viruses, and is already used off-label for Ebola and Lassa virus.
